THE Council of Southern African Football Association (Cosafa) countries were not part of those African countries that were bribed to vote for Sepp Blatter as president of world soccer.
Cosafa president Ismail Bhamjee said that as far as he was concerned, none of his member associations had taken money to help to secure Blatter the International of Federation of Football Associations (Fifa) presidency in 1998.
Bhamjee is an executive committee member of both the Confederation of African Football (Caf) and Fifa.
He was reacting to claims by Farah Addo, the Caf vice-president who is also president of Somalia’s football association, that bribes were paid to 18 African officials to vote for Blatter.
Blatter, a Swiss national, defeated Johansson of Sweden by 111 votes to 80. Addo was quoted in the English media as having said that he was offered $100 000 (R1,1m) to vote for Blatter. – Sapa-AFP
