About 50 Aids activists marched to the Office of the President in Pretoria on Wednesday calling for the provision of social grants to unemployed people living with HIV/Aids. The group – members of Napwa (National Association of People Living with HIV/Aids) – picketed at the Union Buildings and sang liberation songs. Led by the organisation’s national director, Nkululeko Nxesi, the protesters carried placards reading ”Social grants for PWA (people with Aids) means treatment for all” and ”Social grants for social health”. ”In light of President Thabo Mbeki’s declaration that March be earmarked for the commemoration of human rights, we want to highlight the plight of people with HIV/Aids, especially those who live in remote areas. ”We are calling for the government to provide R1_000 per month to each unemployed person living with HIV/Aids,” Nxesi said. – Sapa
