East London | Tuesday
SEA-bird slayer Francina Minnie has been re-arrested and remanded into custody until May 6, when she will appear in the East London Magistrate’s court for failing to report for community service at the local aquarium.
Minnie was sentenced to two years correctional supervision and 384 hours of community service last year, to be spent cleaning aquarium pools.
This followed her conviction in connection with the wanton killing of nine penguins, two pelicans and two gannets.
She was re-arrested by Correctional Services on Friday after she failed to report for her weekly four hour stint at the aquarium last month.
Correctional Services officials referred her back to the court after they could find no valid reason why Minnie had missed her community duties.
On her return to court on May 6, her case will be heard by magistrate Henk van Houwelingen who presided in her case last year.
Acting community Correctional Services head Nomalizo Mqingwana said she had visited Minnie at East London Prison on Sunday but Minnie had offered no valid reason as to why she had missed her duties.
”There is no reason at all,” she said. – Sapa
