SA hiker dies from 1 000 bee stings

Cape Town | Tuesday

A SOUTH African man, believed to be from the Boksburg Hiking Club, died after he and two colleagues were attacked by a swarm of killer bees while hiking in southern Namibia last week.

A representative for a lodge in the area, Chris Baas, said a party of ten people, South Africans and Namibians, went on the hike in the Naukluft mountains on Friday.

Three of the hikers went far ahead of the group and were attacked by the bees.

Baas said the dead man had more than 1000 bee stings. The two hikers, although they had also been stung by the bees, managed to make their way to the Weltevreden Guest Farm where they reported the incident.

The other seven hikers arrived at the guest farm the following day when they were informed the man had died.
