Sowetan journalist in court on rape charge

AFTER spending the night in police custody, a senior Sowetan newspaper journalist, who was originally held in connection with attempted rape, was on Monday granted bail of R2 000 by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on a reduced charge of indecent assault.

Magistrate Charl Labuschagne postponed the matter to May 24 for further investigation.

The journalist, a Hillbrow resident, was arrested on Sunday at his workplace in connection with an incident that allegedly took place on April 26.

He was not asked to plead.

It is alleged that the journalist and others were at a house in Westbury when a woman, who had already gone to sleep, awoke to find someone other than her husband touching her. – Sapa
