Fish in hot water for slingshot incident

AUSTRALIAN DUMPED FROM GAMES TEAM FOR SLINGSHOT OFFENCE

Australian hammer thrower Aaron Fish was expelled from next month’s Commonwealth Games’ team for allegedly firing slingshots at a youth hostel, officials said on Thursday.

Promising sprinter, Jamie Barnes, was also dropped from Australia’s team for the World Junior Championships for his involvement in the incident.

Fish (18) and Barnes (17) were sent home by athletics officials from a training camp in Darwin.

Darwin police said no formal charges had been laid but

investigations were continuing into incidents involving marbles and steel bearings fired from slingshots into a youth hostel.

Athletics Australia chief executive officer Simon Allatson said they may take further action against the athletes.

”We have zero tolerance for any activity that could be deemed inappropriate and could bring the sport into disrepute,” Allatson said.

Fish had been selected for the hammer throw at the Manchester Commonwealth Games starting July 25.

Barnes was to contest the 100m and 200m at the World Junior Championships in Kingston, Jamaica, starting July 16. – Sapa-AFP
