Strikers and employers to head back to the table

The SA Local Government Association and the SA Municipal Workers Union will hold a meeting on Monday in an attempt to bring an 11-day national wage strike to an end.

Salga chief negotiator Don Seemise said the association’s bargaining council would meet negotiators from Samwu as well as the Independent Municipal and Allied Trade Union.

Imatu has already agreed to an eight percent increase.

Seemise denied that formal meetings between the parties had been arranged for this week, saying that Salga and Samwu had been meeting informally.

”No earlier formal meetings were scheduled, but we have been holding ongoing informal talks,” he said.

Samwu has accused Salga of snubbing the union by not being available to attend meetings.

Thousands of municipal workers downed tools on July 2 following a deadlock with Salga on annual wage increases.

Salga is offering the union eight percent while it is demanding 10% or R300, whichever is the highest.

Seemise said Salga was still sticking to its wage offer. However, the association’s negotiators would ”keep an open mind” on Monday.

On Friday the union participated in mass action throughout the country.

There were marches in several towns including Klerksdorp in the North West and Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal.

Rallies were held in Johannesburg, Brakpan, Vanderbijlpark, Newcastle and Pretoria. – Sapa
