Sophiatown oak No residential pardon

An oak tree in Sophiatown that might be as old as Joburg has been earmarked for destruction because it has become a nuisance.

It seems there is little green groups can do to save the tree. Jeunnesse Park of Trees for Africa says the oak’s destruction is a great pity. ”South Africa doesn’t have legislation to protect trees such as this old oak from being chopped down.”

Daniel Mulaudzi, owner of the property on which the tree grows, plans to cut it down. ”The grass won’t grow under the tree and the tree is forever spoiling our yard with its leaves and acorns.”

He is also concerned about safety. ”I can’t build a wall or gate to keep my family safe. What if a child climbs the tree and injures himself? What if it falls on my house?”

Steven Kotze, the local councillor, was distressed to hear that the tree would be cut down. ”We can overcome the owner’s concerns. Professional trimming reduces the volume of falling leaves. Trees like this one outlive humans.”

The tree featured in the novel Triomf. ”I’m attached to the tree as it played an important role in my book. The destruction of trees such as this subtracts from your karma account,” said author Marlene van Niekerk.
