Argentina’s supreme court has handed football legend Diego Maradona a two-year suspended prison sentence for shooting at journalists who were camped outside his home with an air rifle.
Maradona shot at the four reporters in February 1994 after they failed to heed injunctions to stay away from his secondary home in Moreno, in the western suburbs of Buenos Aires.
The supreme court, whose decision cannot be appealed or overturned, voted five for and one against. There were three abstentions and one member of the court who was absent did not vote.
The lawyer for the defence, who has complained repeatedly about the slow progress of the case, had threatened to appeal to international jurisdiction. – Sapa-AFP
