Baby raped in Umtata: 10 year-old arrested

A 10-year-old boy was arrested after a five-month-old baby was raped at Elliotdale outside Umtata in the Eastern Cape on Friday, police said on Sunday.

Captain Alfred Jozana said the infant’s mother had gone to the river to fetch water leaving her in the care of the 10-year-old who is related to the infant’s father. When she returned the baby was crying and bleeding.

Jozana said the baby was taken to hospital for treatment where the district surgeon confirmed she had been raped. The boy will appear in the Elliotdale Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

In another incident in the Eastern Cape, an 18-year-old was arrested at Mgobozi on Friday and will appear in the Nqeleni Magistrate’s Court on Monday in connection with the rape of a one-year-old girl.

Jozana said police were also searching for a 40-year-old Umzimkulu man who allegedly raped his 18-year-old daughter on Thursday night and then ran away. The man was under investigation at the time for the alleged rape of a young child. – Sapa
