Eight members of a family — including five children -‒ were shot and set alight by gunmen in their home in KwaMaye in the Upper Tugela district of the KwaZulu-Natal midlands on Tuesday night, police said.
Only one child survived the attack.
Captain Joshua Gwala said on Wednesday the attackers forced the family’s door open and fired shots randomly at the occupants.
”The attackers then set the rondavel alight before fleeing,” Gwala said.
The victims were identified as 69-year-old Galina Xaba, Eunice Xaba, (55) Delisile Xaba (27) Hlengiwe Xaba (13) Sanelisiwe Xaba (8) Mxolisi Xaba (3) and Neliswa Xaba (2).
Six-year-old Sanele Xaba sustained a gunshot wound to his left leg and was admitted to a local hospital.
The motive for the attack was not known, Gwala said.
