AngloGold signs two year salary deal with unions

South African gold miner Anglogold (ANG) said on Thursday that it has signed a two-year salary agreement with the United Association of South Africa (UASA) and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM).

The agreement, signed on Wednesday, covers the 4 500 officials employed in the company’s South African operations. Officials include the company’s junior managerial, clerical, administrative and certain technical staff, the company said in a statement.

The main terms of the agreement are — as from January 2003 — a 9% across-

the-board increase, plus 2% to be determined on the basis of merit, with the proviso that no official will receive less than a 0,5% merit increase.

As from January 2004, an 8% across-the-board increase. There was no decision on merit.

Negotiations are to begin by October 2003 to determine a merit component for 2004. Those negotiations will take into account “the cost of living in relation to both the actual basic salary increase and the merit component”, AngloGold said.

This is the first time that the NUM has participated in pay negotiations on behalf of officials at AngloGold following an agreement on their representivity in 2001. – I-Net Bridge
