Two more arrested for Zulu family attack

Two more men have been arrested in connection with last week’s attack which claimed the life of KwaZulu-Natal social welfare MEC Prince Gideon Zulu’s son, police said on Monday.

The latest arrests brings to five the number of people apprehended in connection with the attack. Superintendent Vishnu Naidoo said on Monday one man was arrested on Friday at the Umvoti Plaza on the N2 on the North Coast.

”Several firearms, which included an AK47 rifle, an R5 rifle, two pistols as well as several rounds of ammunition, were recovered the same morning at Mahlabthini,” Naidoo said.

”The suspect is being investigated for several other cases including murder and armed robbery.”

The fifth man was arrested in central Durban on Saturday. ”The suspects allegedly commit crimes in the Ulundi area and after every crime they leave the area and return once ‘the dust settles’, thus making it difficult for the detectives to track them down.”

The two men are expected to appear in the Ulundi Regional Court later on Monday on charges of murder, attempted murder, armed robbery and the possession of unlicensed firearms. The three men arrested last week, Bongi Nene (25) Senzo Zulu (18) and Sakhe Buthelezi (23) will reappear in court on February 13. Another man was released earlier.

Prince Mazwi Zulu, his mother, Princess Winfred Dlamini-Zulu, and a driver were travelling from Ulundi to Empangeni when their car came under fire and left the road last Monday. The prince, who was hit in the head, died in hospital on Tuesday and was buried on Saturday. – Sapa
