Rhodes cleared for takeoff

The South African World Cup squad breathed a collective sigh of relief on Monday night after learning that an X-Ray of Jonty Rhodes’ right index finger revealed no break or cracks.

The 33-year-old Rhodes was taken to a hospital in Potchefstroom after the side completed a light training session at the North West Cricket Stadium ahead of their round robin encounter against Kenya on Wednesday.

According to the South African media manager, Gerald de Kock, Rhodes aggravated an old injury while batting on Sunday.

Rhodes, one of only two players in the squad to have featured in all four of South Africa’s World cup campaigns, made only two runs as South Africa slumped to a three run loss to the West Indies in the opening game of the tournament at Newlands.

The injury will not, apparently, jeopardise Rhodes’ chances of being selected for Wednesday’s round robin clash that has taken on some importance following the loss to the Windies. – Sapa
