Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), retained two seats in crucial parliamentary by-elections held at the weekend, according to results announced Monday on state radio.
In the populous Kuwadzana township by-election, the MDC polled 12 548 votes while the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF) garnered 5 002.
In Highfield, where President Robert Mugabe is registered and cast his ballot on Saturday, the opposition MDC got 8 759 against Zanu-PF’s 4 844 votes.
The elections, held to replace a late MDC lawmaker who died while in prison and another one who was expelled from the opposition party, were preceded by high tension and political violence. – Sapa-AFP
