SA donates maize to Zimbabwe

Plans to send over R85-million worth of South African grain to Zimbabwe are well underway and the first maize delivery is expected to be ready for distribution by the end of the week.

SABC radio news reported on Monday that in a project driven by the World Food Programme South African grain was being loaded onto trucks at grain silos throughout the country.

At Bultfontein in the Free State more than 10 trucks a day were being loaded with maize destined for Zimbabwe.

More than seven-million Zimbabweans are facing starvation.

The grain bound for Zimbabwe made up about half of South Africa’s R70-million grain donation for countries in need in Southern Africa. This was a total of one-million tons of grain, SABC reported. – Sapa
