Mandela’s praise singer in court

The case against former President Nelson Mandela’s praise singer Zolani Mkiva for alleged tax evasion was postponed in the East London Regional Court on Tuesday.

Musician and poet Mkiva (31) appeared with traditional leaders Prince Ahlangene Sigcawu (34) and Prince Pasika Nontshiza, 34, and businessman Aloysius Agbona (35) before Magistrate Deon Rossouw.

The case was postponed to May 15 and their bail of R2 000 each was extended.

All four were arrested at their homes in the Eastern Cape during early morning raids by the Joint Anti Corruption Task Team on March 13 for alleged tax evasion worth over R741 000.

They are directors of Egowatch Security Services, a security company. They allegedly submitted false and fraudulent tax returns between 2000 and 2002.

The police were informed by the South African Revenue Services (Sars) that the company had submitted false and fraudulent tax returns since 2000.

Police representative Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said investigations were still continuing. – Sapa
