A total of 25 777 cases of drunk driving were reported in 2001, of which 8 675 involved accidents, according to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula.
In a written reply to a question in the National Assembly, he said most cases were reported in Gauteng (6 485), followed by the Western Cape (4 861), KwaZulu-Natal (4 149), and the Eastern Cape (3 996).
The latest available figures — for January to March 2002 — showed that 1 375 cases were reported in Gauteng, 1 234 in the Western Cape, 736 in KwaZulu-Natal, and 779 in the Eastern Cape, Nqakula said. – Sapa
