The South African History Archives (Saha) has concluded an out of court settlement with the ministries of justice and arts and culture over access to the reports of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
Saha said on Sunday the justice ministry had agreed to give them a list of all TRC records transferred to the National Archives as well as copies of justice records documenting the so-called ”sensitive” records removed from the TRC in 1999.
The records are currently in the custody of the intelligence ministry.
Saha said their request for access to the ”sensitive” TRC records themselves was being dealt with and that the target date for completion was the end of June.
”Until completion, Saha will be given bi-weekly progress reports. If the request is not finalised by the end of June, Saha reserves the right to pursue action in the high court,” Saha added.
The organisation said in terms of the settlement with the Ministry of Arts and Culture, Saha was given copies of National Archives records documenting the custody of the ”sensitive” TRC records.
”The Saha request for records documenting (the) National Archives’s endeavours to implement TRC recommendations on record keeping and archives will be finalised when Cabinet has formally accepted the TRC Report,” SAHA said. ‒ Sapa
