Mandela’s artwork auctioned

A print by former president Nelson Mandela and some other valuable items relating to the Nobel Peace Prize winner were auctioned at the Sandton Hilton hotel on Tuesday night.

The show stopper was a three kilogram pure gold cast of Mandela’s hand, which fetched R450 000. The next highest prize — R335 000 — was paid by Shraga Vidavsky for a series of artist proof prints titled my Robben Island and painted by Mandela. Vidavsky bought the Robben Island series and the gold hand. After the auction he handed the hand back to Mandela.

Other lots went for R100 000 to R130 000. A specially bound version of the Long Walk to Freedom book was bought for R75 000.

The money generated from the auction will go to the Nelson Mandela Trust. – Sapa
