The African National Congress has triumphed by four votes in a fierce election battle with the Democratic Alliance in Cloetesville in Stellenbosch, the Cape Times reported on Thursday.
The ANC’s coalition partner, the New National Party, came third in the council by-election in the coloured area on Wednesday. The ANC garnered 386 votes and the DA 382.
The MEC for Education, Andre Gaum of the NNP, said his party was happy with its showing of 336 votes. He said the ANC-NNP coalition was ”strong enough to (be) a partnership which could rule the Western Cape for many years.
In the other Stellenbosch by-election, in Paradyskloof, Brandwag and Dalsig, predominantly white areas, the DA held on to the seat, gaining 713 votes to the NNP’s 265. – Sapa
