Manto ‘dithering’on anti-retrovirals

Health Minister Tshabalala-Msimang came under fire again on Wednesday, with the Democratic Alliance (DA) accusing her and cabinet of ”dithering and delay” in their handling of the report on the affordability of anti-retrovirals.

DA HIV/ Aids spokesperson Mike Waters said President Thabo Mbeki and Tshabalala-Msimang had sent the report back to the authors asking for more information.

”The government should realise that time is a luxury they don’t have. At least 600 people are dying each and every day from the effects of HIV and Aids,” he said.

During her budget speech in May the minister had promised that a decision would be taken ”very soon” on the use of anti-retrovirals.

”There can be no more excuses. Cabinet must deal with the report into the affordability of anti-retrovirals immediately,” he said.

On day two of the DA’s internet campaign to have Tshabalala-Msimang removed from office ‒ 5 016people had visited the site (www.firemanto.co.za) and 84,64% voted for her dismissal. – Sapa
