South Africa keeps on trucking

The total volume of goods transported during the three months ended April 2003 increased by 4,3% (+6,5-million tons) compared with the three months ended April 2002, according to Statistics South Africa (Stats SA).

Stats SA attributed the increase to increases of 4.4% (+4,7-million tons) and 4% (+1,7-million tons) reported by private sector enterprises and Transnet Ltd respectively.

”However, the seasonally adjusted total volume of goods transported during the three months ended April 2003 decreased by 1,7% compared with the three months ended April 2002. Furthermore, the seasonally adjusted volume of goods transported by private sector enterprises decreased by 2,6%.

”This decrease was partially counteracted by an increase of 0,8% in the seasonally adjusted volume of goods transported by Transnet Ltd during this period,” it said.

The total volume of goods transported during the first four months of 2003 increased by 4,4% (+8,9-million tons) compared with the first four months of 2002. The total volume of goods transported by private sector enterprises and Transnet Ltd increased by 4,8% (+6,8-million tons) and 3,6% (+2,1-million tons) respectively.

The total distance travelled by private sector enterprises during April 2003 increased by 2,1% (+3,7-million kilometres) compared with April 2002. The total gross transport income of private sector enterprises during April 2003 increased by 12% (+R123,1-million rand) compared with April 2002. – I-Net Bridge
