AGOA creating jobs and investment in Africa: Bush

The African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) is creating jobs and stimulating investment across the African continent, US President George Bush said on Wednesday.

South African exports to the US under AGOA had increased by 45% in the last year alone, he said, describing this as “significant progress”.

Bush, who was speaking after talks in Pretoria with South African President Thabo Mbeki on the second stopover of a five nation Africa tour, said the US was working to expand trade with Africa, which he believed was the key to the continent’s economic future.

He added that the US was also working with five nations of the South African Customs Union on a free trade agreement to “help expand the circle of prosperity even wider”. – I-Net Bridge
