Report on SA farm killings published by ‘end of July’

The imminent release of the report into farm attacks in South Africa must surely be welcomed, even though it should have been released quite some time ago, the Democratic Alliance said on Tuesday.

There can be no excuse for the stalling and the ”veil of secrecy” surrounding the report, DA rural safety spokesperson Paul Swart said.

”South African citizens are being killed, and they deserve to know why,” he said.

On Monday, the chairman of the committee of inquiry investigating farm attacks, advocate Charl du Plessis, said the report, almost two years in the making, was expected to be handed to Safety and Security Minister Charles Nqakula before the

end of July.

”The report is in its final stages; we had some setbacks and the minister will only get it towards the end of the month.”

Du Plessis described the report as ”definitive” and said it was long and ”rather bulky”.

”The report runs into hundreds of pages and should be at least two volumes. It is not a document that can be easily read, and we also hope to have an executive summary available so that it can be read more easily.

”The task proved to be much bigger than originally anticipated,” he said, adding that the minister would decide when and how it would be made public. – Sapa
