Blue IQ runners to all receive souvenir medals, T-shirts

All of the runners who took part in the Blue IQ Joburg City Challenge road race on Sunday and who did not receive their T-shirts and medals can collect them next month, the race organisers promised on Monday.

The half-marathon, run to mark the opening of Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, attracted more than double the number of runners than earlier expected, IQ said in a statement.

All registered participants who did not get a medal and a T-shirt on Sunday could collect them on August 16 and 17 at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Blue IQ said.

They should bring their ticket. Adverts would also appear in Gauteng newspapers on Tuesday notifying the public, Blue IQ chief executive officer Pradeep Maharaj said.

”Given the massive support from Gauteng citizens in this new race we would like to say thank you to the more than 12 000 participants, as well as the spectators and service providers who helped make it a truly memorable occasion.

”The race, which attracted some of the continent’s finest half marathon athletes, was a fitting public celebration for Nelson Mandela’s 85th birthday”, Gauteng member of the executive committee for Finance and Economic Affairs Jabu Moleketi said.

The former president cut the ribbon to official open the bridge on Sunday following other festivities to mark his birthday. – Sapa
