Two armed robbers arrested at Mail & Guardian

Two men were arrested in the early hours of Monday while they were attempting an armed robbery at the Mail & Guardian newspaper offices in Milpark, Johannesburg police said.

Captain Mashadi Selepe said the Johannesburg police dog unit arrived at the scene around 2.30am after a security guard inside the building heard a commotion and pressed the panic button.

Police found one security guard (40) at the front gate had been tied up and the two would-be robbers had got inside the building and had tied up the guard who had given the alarm.

Selepe said the dog unit moved into the offices and the two robbers were soon persuaded to surrender.

Selepe said the men, both aged 20, were each carrying an unlicensed pistol when they were arrested and would appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court shortly in connection with charges of attempted armed robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms. – Sapa
