South Africa will rest Headingley Test man-of-the-match Gary Kirsten for their final three-day fixture against Derbyshire starting in Derby on Thursday.
Herschelle Gibbs, Makhaya Ntini and Monde Zondeki will also sit out the match.
Andrew Hall will also not be involved at Derby. He has been released to rejoin Worcestershire on Friday for the C&G Cup final against Gloucestershire at Lords on Saturday.
Shaun Pollock is still in Durban with his wife and newborn daughter. He is due to rejoin his teammates on September 1.
Coach Eric Simons said: ”Gary played two brilliant and emotionally draining innings for us at Headingley last weekend and deserves to put his feet up for a couple of days.
”Herschelle has played every match on tour so far and we need him to be fresh for the fifth Test.”
With respect to the bowlers Simons said: ”It is also a good opportunity for Makhaya and Monde to rest.
”Makhaya has bowled a lot of overs in the last two months, while Monde is still getting over his slight side strain and a few more days of treatment will benefit him.”
Jacques Rudolph is likely to be Graeme Smith’s opening partner in Gibbs’s absence, although Boeta Dippenaar is also an option at the top f the order.
Mark Boucher is to play as a batsman with Thami Tsolekile taking over the wicket-keeping duties. Jacques Kallis is likely to be used sparingly with the ball, which means spinners Robin Peterson, Paul Adams and even Rudolph will provide the support to Charl Willoughby and Dewald Pretorius.
After the physical and mental strain of playing back-to-back Tests the squad enjoyed two days of relaxation and recovery at their golf resort hotel on the outskirts of Derby. Golf was high on the agenda on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Those players who opted not to play the golf course were introduced to its undulating fairways late on Tuesday when fitness trainer Adrian le Roux put the squad through an ”active recovery session” in the form of a 35-minute run around the course. — Sapa
