At least 100 dead in Nigerian road crash

At least 100 people died in a multiple pile-up near the Nigerian capital Abuja this week, road safety officials said on Thursday, announcing a new, higher death toll.

”More people have been confirmed dead from the initial figure of 70,” road safety official Samuel Odukoya was quoted by Star FM radio as saying.

At least 70 people were burnt beyond recognition on Monday when four vehicles ploughed into each other and burst into flames on the road linking Abuja to Lokoja, in central Kogi state.

Odukoya said at least 30 people who were seriously injured in the crash died later in the hospital.

He said 14 people survived the crash, which occurred at night.

Alarmed by the scale of the casualities, President Olusegun Obasanjo advised Nigerians against travelling at night if it can be avoided. — Sapa-AFP
