Premier still mum on mismanagement

Mpumalanga Premier Ndaweni Mahlangu has refused a Democratic Alliance request to release an audit report about alleged mismanagement of funds in the provincial health department, the DA said on Thursday.

”He is not able to say when the report will be released, but responded by saying possible disciplinary action will be taken against the wrongdoers,” provincial DA leader Clive Hatch said in a statement.

The party would press ahead with its efforts to secure the release of the relevant documents, by way of submitting an application to the Office of the Premier in terms of the Promotion of Access to Information Act.

”It is our view that justice can best be served through the release of these reports,” Hatch said.

A spokesperson for the premier said he could not comment immediately.

The DA called for the release of the report after Mahlangu’s announcement last month that he was reshuffling his executive council with effect from September 1, mainly to rectify instances of mismanagement and ”alleged wrongdoing” discovered by a series of forensic audits.

Health MEC Sibongile Manana was moved to the sports, recreation, arts and culture portfolio. At the same time, Riena Charles, the head of the health department, became deputy director general in Mahlangu’s office.

”The premier has had the reports for at least three months,” Hatch said. — Sapa
