Bank of Botswana governor Linah Mohohlo has been voted central bank governor of the year for sub-Saharan Africa, an international financial magazine, Euromoney, announced on Friday.
Mohohlo received the award after a poll by international investors, bankers and representatives of financial and capital markets.
”Her [Mohohlo] firm stance behind the Botswana pula and her push for curbs on spending and maintaining stable interest rates have allowed her to keep a lid on inflation,” Euromoney said in its latest edition.
Mohohlo reportedly told the publication: ”African countries are not a homogenous group in terms of fiscal management and standards.
”The world economic history is littered with casualties of fiscal mismanagement. Prudent fiscal management is indispensable in today’s modern economies given its potential in underpinning an appropriate macro-economic balance as a basis for sustainable growth.”
Joyce Chang, head of emerging markets research at JP Morgan, said: ”The central bank governor deserves much of the credit for Botswana’s highly prudent management of its overall economy.” — Sapa
