Health minister, task team burn the midnight oil

Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, her deputy Renier Schoeman and the health MECs met the task team developing a detailed operational plan for a national anti-retroviral treatment programme in Pretoria on Thursday.

Task team chairman Anthony Mbewu said on Friday its draft report on the programme was discussed late into the night. Issues discussed included human resource requirements for the programme, the capacity in different provinces to carry out the plan, and ensuring that the proposed programme became an integral part of the current health services.

”The task team had a wide range of issues to deal with in line with its terms of reference within a limited period of six weeks. We therefore regard this critical project as a work-in-progress that will improve with the inputs received through government policy formulation processes,” he said.

The Aids treatment plan was presented to Tshabalala-Msimang in Pretoria on Tuesday. She is expected to present it to Cabinet soon.

Cabinet will take a final decision on how the roll-out will occur.

Mbewu said on Friday the task team’s collective goal was to ensure the Cabinet received a good quality plan on which to take a pragmatic decision. – Sapa
