Hosts Nigeria shot to second place on the overall All-Africa Games medals table after some superlative performances on the wrestling mat and powerlifting event on Wednesday.
Nigeria had picked up their first medals on Tuesday — a gold through Ruel Ishiaku in powerlifting and a silver in the badminton team event — and they have sustained the momentum by increasing their haul to nine gold and three silver medals to go past Egypt, who have recorded eight gold, 13 silver and 15 bronze.
South Africa have consolidated their dominance at the games by so far winning 19 gold, 13 silver and 12 bronze medals.
Algeria and Tunisia are fourth and fifth, respectively. Algeria have five gold, five silver and two bronze, and Tunisia have bagged three gold, six silver and four bronze.
Other countries who have got on the medals’ board include Niger (one gold, one silver), the Seychelles (two silvers, one bronze), Burkina Faso and Senegal (a silver and two bronze). — Sapa-AFP
