Juventus take over in Italy

Defending Serie A champion Juventus took over sole possession of first place in Italy on Sunday and Arsenal stayed in front in England and Deportivo de la Coruna reclaimed the top spot in Spain.

Juventus came back from a one-goal deficit to beat Udinese 4-1. AC Milan, who had been tied with Juventus, was held to a 0-0 draw at Parma.

Marco di Vaio scored twice and Fabrizio Miccoli and David Trezeguet scored one each.

Earlier, Alessandro del Piero missed a penalty for Juventus and Marek Jankulovski converted another to give Udinese the lead.

Fredrik Ljungberg scored the winner as Arsenal rallied to beat north London rival Tottenham 2-1.

Darren Anderton had given Tottenham a surprising lead in the fifth minute, but Robert Pires equalised and Ljungberg netted the winner in the second half.

Deportivo, who won for the first time in three matches, needed two own-goals from Igor Jauregi to beat Real Sociedad 2-1. On Wednesday, the Spanish club was thrashed by Monaco 8-3 in the Champions League.

Nihat Kahveci had given Sociedad the lead, but Jauregi scored on his own net twice within 15 minutes in the second half.

Italy

European champion AC Milan dropped to second in the Serie A with their goalless draw at Parma and AS Roma jumped into a tie for second by downing crosstown rival Lazio 2-0.

Parma goalkeeper Vincenzo Sicignano made a series of saves on Andriy Shevchenko and Clarence Seedorf to keep the team in fourth place. Alessandro Mancini and Emerson scored for Roma.

Struggling Inter Milan, who got a goal from Christian Vieri, beat Ancona 3-0.

Juventus lead with 23 points, followed by Milan and Roma with 21 each. Parma are next with 18, followed by Inter and Lazio with 16 each.

England

Chelsea remained in second place in the English Premier League by trouncing Newcastle 5-0 and Manchester United stayed a point back after nipping Liverpool 2-1.

Hernan Crespo and Damien Duff scored two of the goals for big-spending Chelsea while Ryan Giggs scored twice in the second half at Anfield. Harry Kewell scored for Liverpool, who played without the injured Michael Owen.

Surprising Charlton jumped from seventh to fourth as Jonatan Johansson scored twice to help beat Fulham 3-1.

Arsenal lead the league with 30 points, one more than Chelsea and two more than Manchester United. Charlton are next with 21.

Spain

Both defending champion Real Madrid and Valencia could have been in first place, but both lost.

Madrid, who were playing without injured Roberto Carlos, lost to Sevilla 4-1. Racing de Santander surprised Valencia 2-1.

Struggling FC Barcelona moved up to fourth place by beating Betis 2-1. Unhappy Patrick Kluivert, who replaced the injured Ronaldinho, scored once.

Deportivo lead the league with 25 points, two more than both Valencia and Madrid. Barcelona are next with 19, ahead of Atletico de Madrid on goal difference.

Germany

VfB Stuttgart got goals from Kevin Kuranyi and Imre Szabics to beat Eintracht Frankfurt 2-0 and remain unbeaten at the top of the Bundesliga. Stuttgart (9-3-0) have a 19-2 goal difference.

Bayer Leverkusen stayed in second place after beating FC Schalke 3-1 and Werder Bremen held third after trouncing Hannover 96 5-1.

Also, defending champion Bayern Munich jumped into fourth place after beating Borussia Dortmund 4-1.

Stuttgart lead the league with 30 points, followed by Levekusen with 29 and Bremen with 28. Bayern are next with 24, two more than Dortmund.

The Netherlands

Ajax moved three points clear at the top of the Dutch league after beating ADO The Hague 4-1. AZ Alkmaar moved back into second place by downing NAC Breda 2-1.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored one goal and set up another for Ajax.

Defending champion PSV Eindhoven, who dropped to third, needed an own-goal to draw 1-1 with RBC Roosendaal.

Ajax are in first place with 28 points, followed by AZ with 25 and PSV with 24. Feyenoord, who beat FC Volendam 3-1, are next with 21 points.

Scotland

John Hartson scored two goals as Scottish Premier League leader Celtic crushed Dunfermline 5-0 while Rangers edged Kilmarnock 3-2 on a late goal from Nuno Capucho.

Henrik Larsson also scored for Celtic and Shota Arveladze got two for Rangers.

Celtic lead the league with 34 points, followed by Rangers with 29.

Greece

Olympiakos stayed two points ahead of archrival Panathinaikos in the Greek league after both teams won.

Defending champion Olympiakos topped Iraklis 3-1 while Panathinaikos beat Aris 1-0. Giovanni scored his fourth goal in three matches for Olympiakos and Angelos Basinas netted for Panathinaikos.

Olympiakos lead with 25 points, followed by Panathinaikos with 23. PAOK Thessaloniki and Aegaleo are next with 20 points each.

France

Monaco retained first place in the French league as Dada Prso scored again to lead his team over Ajaccio 1-0. Prso scored four times on Wednesday when Monaco crushed Spain’s Deportivo in the Champions League.

Lyon moved into sole possession of second place after beating Marseille 4-1.

Monaco lead with 30 points, followed by defending champion Lyon with 27, Marseille with 24 and Paris Saint-Germain, who beat Nantes 1-0, with 23.

Portugal

Unbeaten FC Porto stayed at the top of the Portuguese league despite a disappointing 1-1 draw with Moreirense. Benni McCarthy gave the defending champions the lead, but Manoel equalised.

Benfica won its sixth match of the season, getting two goals from Tiago to beat Alverca 3-0.

Porto lead with 29 points, followed by Braga with 21 and Benfica, Boavista and Beira Mar with 20 each. Sporting, which visits Pacos Ferreira on Monday, are next with 19.

Norway

Jan Gunnar Solli scored twice in extra time as Rosenborg beat Bodo/Glimt 3-1 in the cup final to complete the Norwegian double for the seventh time. — Sapa-AP
