Union plans Fancourt protest

Security in George will be at an unprecedented height on Thursday in preparation of threats that the Independent Commercial Hospitality Allied Workers’ Union (Ichawu) intend a protest march to coincide with the opening ceremony of the Presidents Cup at Fancourt.

Members of the union who work at hotels along the holiday strip from George to Knysna, inhabited by scores of international and local guests for the golfing showpiece, intend a strike to support disgruntled workers at Fancourt.

According to Dale Fish of Ichawu, the protest will take place outside the main entrance to the exclusive Fancourt golfing estate.

Former Fancourt workers who claim to have been dismissed unfairly will join the protest. They work on the golf courses and in catering.

Ichawu represents about 180 Fancourt workers who are to vote on whether to strike during the four-day tournament featuring Tiger Woods, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh in the United States versus international tournament.

The official opening gets under way at 10am. Protesters plan to march from York Street in town to the Fancourt entrance in Plattner Avenue. — Sapa
