Severe rainfall brings chaos in Spain

Meteorologists in Spain on Monday warned against further severe rainfall and storms following a weekend in which six people died in severe weather conditions.

The Eastern Spanish regions of Valencia and Murcia, and Andalusia in the south of the country, were expecting snow, rain and storms. Meteorologists predicted additional rainfall of up to 100 litre per square metre and snow at levels above 600m, officials said.

On the weekend five people died as severe rains caused floods in various parts of the country.

Another victim died on Monday on the Costa Brava when seven people were swept into the sea by a breaking wave.

At the weekend, two young men drowned when their car was swept into a river near Huelva in southern Spain. They had been trying to cross the river with a sports utility vehicle.

A young couple died when their car plunged 40m from a rock into the river Llobregat near Barcelona in the northeast of the country.

Another young man died in southern Spain after falling into a river and being swept along by the water for 7km.

Rain and snowfall also effected traffic, causing a high number of crashes between Saturday and Monday in which more than 50 people died, a number far above the death toll of an average weekend. — Sapa-DPA
