Sun International, one of South Africa’s largest listed hotel and gaming groups, is planning a significant expansion of its Fish River Sun resort in the Eastern Cape, including the sale of some of the property by Pam Golding Properties (PGP), in a project that will represent sizeable investment for the region.
The 40-unit Fish River Sun is located on the coast on the R72 highway between Port Alfred and East London. It features a country club, health and beauty clinic and an 18-hole golf course, with all units part of the group’s Vacation Club timeshare scheme.
PGP executive and head of the project Louis van Niekerk said that Sisa and PGP were “very far down the line” in planning the Fish River Sun expansion, and were currently going through the approval process, including land usage and environmental impact, with the local authorities.
However, finalisation was still “a couple of months off” and details of the project were only expected to be publicised early in the new year.
The only substantial capital spending budgeted by Sisa in 2004 is the R650-million allocated for the group’s new Sibaya casino at Umdlodti. This is scheduled for opening in late 2004. Sisa management was not available for comment. – I-Net Bridge
