Child killed in Baghdad school blast

A child was killed and two others were wounded on Monday when an explosion ripped through a primary school in a Shiite Muslim district of the Iraqi capital, a senior police officer said.

The explosion shook the school in the Kadhamiyah neighborhood, but it was not clear what caused the blast, said General Raad al-Nuaimi.

”The explosion happened around 3pm [local time] at Asmaa primary school. A girl, Wafaa Khaled, was killed and two others children were wounded,” Nuaimi said.

A series of powerful blasts have targeted Iraq’s Shiite majority as well as the rival Sunni Muslim community, in what many United States and Iraqi officials suspect is a plot by foreign fighters and old regime loyalists to provoke a civil war. — Sapa-AFP
