NNP lists for Western Cape released

The New National Party in the Western Cape on Tuesday became the first of the party’s provincial structures to release its candidates lists for the coming elections.

Party leader Marthinus van Schalkwyk tops both the national and provincial lists by virtue of his position as provincial leader.

The lists put tourism and gambling provincial minister Joyce Witbooi in second place for the province, and party stalwart Cecil Herandien in the number-two slot for national.

Provincial minister of health Piet Meyer is third on the provincial list, followed by Cape Town Unicity Deputy Mayor Pierre Uys, local government provincial minister Cobus Dowry, and provincial minister of agriculture Johan Gelderblom.

There are three women besides Witbooi in the top 20 names for the province.

Third on the national list is sitting MP and chairperson of the standing committee on public accounts Francois Beukman, followed by Stan Simmons and Carel Greyling.

The first woman on the national list, MP Carol Johnson, slots in at number seven.

The party’s other provincial structures have yet to finalise their lists.

Unlike the African National Congress, the NNP does not consolidate provinces’ choices into a single national list.

Instead, candidates are drawn from the lists in accordance with the number of votes the party delivers in each province. — Sapa
