The son of Gauteng safety and security minister Nomvulo Mokonyane appeared at the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday on charges of theft and malicious damage to property.
West Rand police spokesperson Captain Paula Nothnagel said Africa Mokonyane (21) was arrested in August last year after he had allegedly broken into his aunt’s house in Kagiso, Krugersdorp.
Nothnagel said Mokonyane, who was staying with his aunt at the time, broke the window to force himself into the house and stole his aunt’s cellular phone. According to Nothnagel, Mokonyane also stole about R200 given to him by his aunt to pay the phone bill.
Nothnagel said Mokonyane’s aunt laid criminal charges against him after she had contacted his mother.
“The woman contacted Mokonyane Snr right after the incident and the [provincial minister] told her to go to the police.”
The case was postponed to March 8.
Mokonyane was remanded in custody after he failed to pay R1Â 500 bail granted to him by the court.
