An African National Congress (ANC) activist was shot dead near Umkhomazi, south of Durban, on Friday, according to a statement from the party.
The ANC said it believed two out of five attackers who were party to the murder of 25-year-old Sifiso Msomi, were local Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) activists.
The IFP could not be reached for comment.
Another ANC activist, Sibonelo Mbutho, was wounded, said the ANC’s KwaZulu-Natal security spokesperson Bheki Cele. He said Msomi had died in hospital.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Vish Naidoo on Sunday confirmed Msomi’s death and the incident without mentioning political allegiances.
”Last month another ANC activist in the area, Siyabonga Maphumulo, was killed when our supporters were coming from a rally held at Umlazi,” said Cele.
”The ANC is ready to go to grassroots level with the IFP to preach the gospel of political tolerance.” – Sapa
