Justice Minister Penuell Maduna is expected to spend some time in hospital after being injured in a car accident, the Sandton Medi-Clinic indicated on Wednesday.
”We do not expect him to be discharged soon,” spokesperson Vicky Nash said.
She said Maduna was in ”perfect health”, but had suffered a fractured femur.
Maduna injured a leg and arm when his Mercedes-Benz rolled on Monday night. The car overturned at the corner of Ballyclare and William Nicol drives in Bryanston, Sandton at 11.25pm. He was alone in the car.
Police have opened a docket for reckless or negligent driving.
Gauteng police spokesperson Director Faizel Kader said on Wednesday it was normal procedure for police to open a docket for reckless or negligent driving when a person was injured or killed in a car accident.
He refused to comment further on the accident. The minister’s spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago appealed to the media on Wednesday to stop speculating over the matter.
This followed media reports that Maduna did not take a breathalyser test to establish whether he had been drinking alcohol.
”When the police go to the scene of the accident, the first thing they attend to is the person who has been injured. I am surprised that people are asking if the police had taken a breathalyser test,” said Kganyago.
