ANC suspends ‘DJ mayor’

The Western Cape provincial working committee of the African National Congress has temporarily suspended Kannaland Municipality Mayor Jeffrey Donson as an ANC member, pending a disciplinary hearing.

Announcing the decision on Thursday, ANC provincial secretary Mcebisi Skwatsha said: ”Internal processes of the ANC have been in motion since the allegations of irregularity against the mayor began surfacing.”

”We have also received formal complaints from ANC members on the alleged malpractice in the Kannaland Municipality,” he said.

These factors had culminated in the committee’s decision to suspend Donson.

In terms of the ANC constitution, Donson will have a chance to state his case and defend himself at an internal disciplinary hearing ”in due course”.

The ANC will now focus on ensuring stability and good governance in the Kannaland Municipality, Skwatsha said.

The municipality incorporates the towns of Ladismith, Calitzdorp, Van Wyksdorp and Zoar.

According to media reports, Donson, who moonlights as a DJ, was recently confronted by angry taxpayers over the alleged use of public money to fund this other career. — Sapa
