Late goal secures draw for Hellenic

Bottom of the log Hellenic earned a 2-2 draw against the Limpopo-based Silver Stars in a Premier Soccer League match played at Pam Brink Stadium in Springs on Sunday afternoon.

The score was 1-1 at the break. Hellenic trailed 2-1 with time elapsed on the clock, only for the referee to award a free kick in the dying seconds which striker Masixole May slammed home.

The visitors striker Surprise Moriri opened the scoring in the 28th minute, capitalising from goalkeeper Energy Murambaboro’s error.

Hellenic hit back immediately getting the equaliser in the 31st minute — a cracking shot from midfielder Richard Ranjie.

Silver Stars substitute Tony Tsabedeze, who came on in the 63rd minute, scored his team’s second goal in the 89th minute and seemed to have done enough to secure the win.

However, in referee’s optional time there was drama when Stars ‘keeper Uche Akubike was penalised for delay tactics.

The referee awarded an indirect free kick in the box and May scored the dramatic equaliser.

More controversy ensued once the final whistle was blown, with seven or eight Stars players surrounding the referee in a menacing fashion.

While the players were angrily remonstrating with the official, he was escorted to safety by PSL security guards.

Although they earned a point, Hellenic are a sure bet to go down at the end of the season. — Sapa
