Prominent soccer personality arrested

A prominent figure in South African soccer has been released on bail following his arrest on Monday night on a charge of assault, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.

The man was arrested in the south of Johannesburg at about 9.30pm on Monday and was granted bail of R2 000 after consultation with a senior state prosecutor, a statement issued on behalf of Assistant Commissioner Oswald Reddy said.

He is due to appear in court in Booysens on Wednesday.

On Monday, police spokesperson Inspector Amanda Roestoff said a charge had been laid by a woman after a domestic dispute at a Naturena home, south of Johannesburg, allegedly resulted in her sustaining injuries to her head.

Justice Minister Penuell Maduna referred to the case at the launch of an Integrated Domestic Violence Training Programme in Pretoria on Monday.

”It is completely inexcusable and I will ensure this person is arrested, prosecuted and sentenced,” he said.

”You just don’t do this to someone you apparently love.” – Sapa
