Santos through to semifinal

The Absa Cup champions, Santos, joined Ajax Cape Town in the semifinal of the competition after beating SuperSport United 2-1 in the quarterfinals at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

The game appeared to be heading for extra time when in optional time David Notoane centred and Musa Otieno squeezed the ball between goalkeeper Calvin Marling and the upright.

The visitors came close in the second minute when Abram Raselemane passed to Tsu Mogoro, whose shot was blocked by Brenden Wardell.

A similar thing took place in the seventh minute but at the other end Tyrone Arendse put over a cross to Marawan Bantam, who cut in, but his shot was blocked by Marlin.

The home side opened the score in the 29th minute when Arendse unleashed a powerful shot from 35m that flew low into the right-hand corner.

Ten minutes later Marlin saved brilliantly from a powerful shot by Bantam.

In the dying moments of the first half Phillip Evans’s shot was turned into a corner by Wardell.

United equalised in the 65th when Wardell brought down Aubin Tiakuchie and Evans scored from the sport.
