Chiefs miss chance to extend lead

Kaizer Chiefs were held to a 0-0 draw against Silver Stars in a Castle Premiership match played at the FNB Stadium on Saturday.

Both sides created few scoring opportunities but it was Chiefs who were the first to be creative in front of their opponents’ goals.

In the 42nd minute Amakhosi striker David Radebe should have struck the ball himself, but instead laid it off to Cyril Nzama who shot well wide from an acute angle.

Then midfielder Junior Khanye came the closest to breaking the deadlock in the 47th minute but his powerful shot was efficiently dealt with by Stars goalkeeper Uche Akubike.

Stars almost replied instantly when December Chauke dispossessed a Chiefs player and played it through for Sipho Mchabe, but Chiefs goalie Rowen Fernandez parried the ball to safety.

The second half was more of the same and the only two clear-cut chances fell to Stars first, when substitute Koketso Mmotong beat the offside trap but failed to shoot at goal, and then to Chiefs when a last-minute effort by Nzama was tipped over the bar by Akubike.

Chiefs remain five points clear of second-placed Ajax Cape Town, who will be hoping to close the gap on Wednesday when they face Golden Arrows. — Sapa
