Security on major routes to and from Johannesburg International airport is set to increase as authorities prepare to welcome the various dignitaries arriving for Tuesday’s inauguration of President Thabo Mbeki, police said on Saturday.
Superintendent Eugene Opperman said: ”There’s going to be a lot of escorts by police.”
He said all the major highways leading from the airport to Johannesburg and Pretoria will have additional security in the form of marked and unmarked cars as well as special observation points.
He said the South African Police Service as well as the various metropolitan police departments will be involved.
He ask motorists to be considerate of the convoys and to give way where possible for safety reasons.
Referring to the additional security measures he said: ”Criminality might take a dive.” — Sapa
