Death toll rises in Gaza City

Another Palestinian was killed by Israeli troops in the Gaza City neighbourhood of Zeitun, Palestinian medical sources said, raising to seven the number of Palestinians killed there on Tuesday.

The identity of the latest victim was not immediately known.

Five other Palestinians, including two militants from the Islamist movement Hamas, were killed in earlier Zeitun clashes.

Six Israeli soldiers also died in Zeitun when militants blew up their armoured transport.

A 12-year-old Palestinian was killed on Tuesday and five other people wounded when an Israeli helicopter fired a missile near a market in Gaza City, Palestinian medical sources said.

The helicopter struck a car that was apparently empty and parked near a busy market in the eastern Shajayah neighbourhood, witnesses said.

According to military sources, the raid targeted a group of armed Palestinians who were about to attack Israeli troops.

The latest deaths bring to 3 989 the number of fatalities in the Palestinian uprising that erupted in September 2000, including 3 008 Palestinians and 911 Israelis, according to an AFP tally. — Sapa-AFP
