Bookies favour SA

South Africa is the favourite to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup, according to an online bookmaker. Centrebet is accepting bets on the outcome of Saturday’s election in Switzerland where the 24 members of international football’s executive committee will cast their votes.

Centrebet is taking bets at 1-5 that the Federation of International Football Associations (Fifa) will award the world’s second biggest sports event to South Africa.

The Australia-based bookmaking organisation also quotes Morocco at 3-1, Egypt at 16-1 and any other country — Libya and Tunisia — at 50-1.

”The word on the streets of Switzerland is that the vote will be close but I think that South Africa is ahead of its rivals,” said Centrebet’s Mark Worwood.

”Fifa’s inspectors ranked it first and there could be a sympathy vote after the 2006 controversy.” – Sapa
